What is Letterpress and why is it Special?

What is Letterpress?

Letterpress is the oldest type of printing, dating back to the 15th century, possibly earlier. Initially, metal or wooden letters were set by hand, but modern practices have led to the development of photopolymer plates created from a digital file. These plates are similar to a rubber stamp. Ink is applied to the raised surface and pressed directly into a thick sheet of cotton paper to create an impression (deboss). While there are several antique machines that can create this look, we use a 10×14 Chandler and Price press in our studio. We take pride in crafting each invitation, starting with hand-mixing ink and applying it to a rotating double ink disk. Our process involves manually feeding each individual piece of cotton paper into the press, resulting in a beautiful impression. Although labor-intensive, the results are well worth the investment in creating a one-of-a-kind invitation.
